8/17 @ 6:30 p.m: We’re actually going to go shoot stuff!

Geeks and Guns is meeting at AMERICAN CLASSIC MARKSMAN GUN RANGE at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 17th. Afterward we’ll be going across the street for dinner at a Thai restaurant Angus knows. Leave a comment and let us know if you’re going.

Geeks and Guns a Success!

Last night’s Geeks and Guns event in Marietta was a hell of a lot of fun. In attendance we had myself (Michael Mealling), Stephen Fleming, Angus McRae, and Leon. Leon was a first time shooter and had a great opportunity to be introduced to a large array of different gun types. I brought my H&K USP Compact .40, Beretta Tomcat .32 auto, and a Ruger Mark II .22. Stephen brought several .357 revolvers and a little .22 revolver. Angus brought the most fun with a 1911 .45, a Glock 23 (.357 and .40 seemed to be popular), an FN FAL (7.62×51), and an AK-47 (7.62×39). That’s me to the left with the AK-47.

I personally still prefer the FN FAL and have it on my short list as a personal Christmas present to myself. Sure it was a short rifle range but even with the fog in my glasses and the blown out light at the end of the range I was able to keep a tight 2″ diameter group.

Everyone was definitely ready to do it all again. We may decide to move to other ranges around the city since some have some interesting features: longer rifle ranges, more lanes, etc. We could even organize a trip to Riverbend.

Thanks again to everyone who came!

Next Geeks and Guns: Tuesday, May 27th at 6:30 p.m. at Nick’s Guns

The next Geeks and Guns range day is Tuesday, May 27th at 6:30 pm at Nick’s Guns and Range in the shopping center at the corner of Piedmont Rd (the one Barrett Parkway turns into) and Canton Road.
You can shoot for as long as you are willing to pay for the lane and
you have ammo. Most of us will probably head out afterward for dinner.

The range closes at 8:00 so I moved it back to 6:30. Feel free to get there when you can.

Please RSVP
if you can so that I can reserve the right number of lanes. Everyone is
responsible for their own lane fees ($8/hour), ear and eye protection,
ammo, targets, and firearms. Nick’s has a very LARGE assortment of
rentable guns. If you have never shot a firearm before please let me
know ASAP so that we can assign someone to do an introduction to
shooting and firearm safety.

There is a rifle range at Nick’s which is limited to 300 Win Magnum. (That means .223 and 7.62×39
are OK.)

Canceled: Wednesday, May 7th at 6:00 at Nick’s Gun and then the 8:00 Ironman at AMC Barrett Commons 24

Due to an unforeseen event downtown I’m going to have to cancel this attempt at some range time. If you have a suggested time you would like to try for please let me know.

Wednesday afterwork and then Ironman?

So Saturday sucked due to morning sporting events for everyone’s kids. A friend of mine has the day off on Wednesday and wants some introductory training so we’re going to meet back at the same range at 5:30 on Wednesday afternoon, shoot for about an hour or two and then go see Ironman. Anyone game?

First Geeks and Guns range day: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3rd at Nicks Guns

The first Geeks and Guns range day is this Saturday, May 3rd at 10:00 at Nick’s Guns and Range (it used to be called Ed’s Guns and Range) in the shopping center at the corner of Piedmont Rd (the one Barrett Parkway turns into) and Canton Road. You can shoot for as long as you are willing to pay for the lane and you have ammo. Most of us will probably head out around noon to get lunch in the area.
